The NDIS Vision

The NDIS vision is to optimise the social and economic independence and full participation of people with disability.

My lifelong experience with art/craft, storytelling and media processes plus my training in art as therapy is well applied to address the CORE and CAPACITY BUILDING aspects of the the NDIS Outcome framework.

CORE, Social and Community Participation:
  • In collaborative creative processes relational skills are developed and expanded.

  • In discussion and story telling processes relational skills are also developed and expanded.

  • Created works can have targeted outcomes which involve the wider community.

  • Group shows of creative projects offer another avenue to participate and be seen.

CAPACITY BUILDING, Health and Wellbeing:
  • When a person enjoys creative processes and focuses, anxiety is reduced.

  • Hand/eye co-ordination is increased.

  • Expressing emotion, feelings and thoughts through colours, shapes and images can increase self awareness and help to release built up tensions in our body/minds. The result is a participant will feel more valued and seen. Positive results will further be increased through discussion about the experience of making and any thoughts and feelings that arise in the process.

  • Creative outcomes increase a sense of achievement. This affirming feeling can be increased through participation in group shows and/or seeing works being used by others.

  • Literacy and numeracy skills can be incorporated into art and craft processes.

CAPACITY BUILDING, Lifelong Learning:
  • Many skills and educational benefits are developed by engaging in art and craft techniques such as using brushes, mixing colours, pattern making, understanding different qualities of materials and textures, observation (drawing), assembly of elements, exploring varied mark making processes, cutting, glueing, folding, composition, story telling.

  • If available to participants the digital environment also offers many possibilities; painting, designing and animation.

  • A participant's capacity is also built through not only learning and following guided processes but through considering varied possibilities and making their own creative decisions.

CAPACITY BUILDING, Relationships:
  • Collaborating in art/craft processes with others in a group, offers shared fun and experience which leads to the possibility of new friendships forming.

  • The participants relationship with him/herself (or otherwise) is expanded. Art therapy processes can also be targeted to address particular issues or problems a participant has, such as feeling undervalued or frustrated.
